Sources: Man United's chances of signing Alejandro Balde in January gets boost

Manchester United have an "improved" chance of signing Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The Spanish giants were demanding a £30million fee for the 22-year-old in the summer, which made it "difficult" for United as they had already spent big money on midfield reinforcements.

Balde made it clear that he was perfectly happy to stay at Barcelona, but he has since received just 12 minutes of action in La Liga.

Sources say that the starlet's lack of football has boosted the Red Devils' chances of prising him away this winter, as he is more open to the idea of a move.

Michael Carrick's side have been working to add more depth at left-back in recent months, and Balde is still firmly on their list of targets.

The Spain international made 42 appearances for the Blaugrana in all competitions last term, but has hardly featured so far in 2026-27.

United were heavily linked with a move for Balde in the final stages of the summer window, but never truly received enough encouragement from the player.

The youngster was keen to continue working hard to gain experience with his boyhood club, but he hasn't been rewarded for that so far this term.

As a result, United have had their hopes of securing a winter move boosted in recent weeks, but Barcelona's valuation still looks unlikely to change.

Hansi Flick's side will only let Balde go if their £30m asking price is met, which creates a hurdle for United to overcome.

Balde is vastly experienced despite his tender age, and already has 30 appearances to his name in the Champions League.

United are keen to secure a long-term successor to Luke Shaw at left-back, and he remains someone who is towards the top of their list.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that United are planning to enter talks with Shaw over a new contract at the start of 2027.

The England international is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season, but the club still view him as a key part of their project.

Shaw is now into his 13th season with the Red Devils, and is now the longest-serving first-team player at the club.

His injury record has provided concern for United in recent years, but he featured in every single Premier League game for the first time in his career in 2025-26.
