Wayne Rooney should rethink his Man United call for Scott McTominay as Scotland display audited
Wayne Rooney should think again about Manchester United re-signing Scott McTominay following his opening World Cup performance.
McTominay played the full 90 minutes as Scotland earned a crucial 1-0 win over Haiti thanks to John McGinn's first half goal.
The 29-year-old came into the tournament off the back of another strong campaign at Napoli, where he contributed 10 goals and three assists in Serie A.
Since leaving Man United in 2024, McTominay has been linked on numerous occasions with a return to the Premier League, with Arsenal once believed to be considering a move.
It is no secret that Man United are looking to add to their midfield this summer, with a deal having already been agreed with Atalanta for the Red Devils to sign Ederson.
Champions League qualification means Man United would now be in a stronger position to encourage players like McTominay to come back to Old Trafford.
Scott McTominay fails to impress vs Haiti
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney show on 11 June, the former Man United striker said he "couldn't believe" the club allowed to let McTominay to leave for Napoli in 2024.
Rooney then added: "You'd love to have him back at Man United now."
Rooney though may be having second thoughts about Man United perusing McTominay this summer following his display for Scotland against Haiti.
Against a side ranked by FIFA 41 places below Scotland, McTominay only won two of his eight duels in the match.
McTominay lost five ground duels, and one aerial duel, whilst also being dribbled past once.
Successfully completing only one of his four dribbles, and not making any key passes, it was not the standout display many were expecting, and overall Scotland only had 37 per cent possession in the second half.
Man United look to be focusing their efforts in the transfer market on signing West Ham star Mateus Fernandes, with former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson telling Football Insider, that the 21-year-old is set to be sold for around £75million this summer.
Man United should secure Mateus Fernandes signing
West Ham are expected to want to cash in on Fernandes, meaning Man United are in a position to seal his signature this summer.
A box-to-box and highly technical playmaker, Fernandes would look to be an ideal long-term signing for Man United.
Whilst many Man United fans would welcome back McTominay, at 29, the Scotland international would not be entering his peak years like Fernandes.
McTominay's contract at Napoli expires in 2028, and the Italian club are keen to extend his deal to fend off any potential interest.
