Where Bruno Fernandes would rank in Man United's record sales amid last-gasp exit whispers

Bruno Fernandes is once again the subject of huge interest as the end of the transfer window approaches at Manchester United.

Supporters will be more than familiar with the usual merry-go-round surrounding their Portuguese superstar, and this summer is no different.

Fernandes is one of the greatest playmakers in the world, and even at 31 year of age, soon to be 32, he notched nine goals and 22 assists in 37 games last season.

Only Erling Haaland had more Premier League goal contributions in 2025-26, and everything positive at Old Trafford usually goes through him.

However, BBC Sport have revealed that Juventus, AC Milan and Galatasaray are all eyeing a late deal in the window for the player who has a £57million release clause.

This release clause is only available to clubs overseas, and with just one year left at Man United, unless an extra year is triggered, he could leave for free next summer.

It remains to be seen how United would respond to a bid in the final few days of the window, but losing him would be an incredibly big blow.

Nonetheless, £57m is not a fee that should be immediately thrown to one side, especially for a near-32-year-old, whose contract, currently, will expire in less than 12 months.

In fact, that fee would see Fernandes become United's third-most expensive sale of all time, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.

Man United sold Ronaldo for £80m in 2009, while Lukaku was sold for £74m a decade later. He would overtake Angel Di Maria, who sits third, thanks to his £44.3m move to PSG in 2015.

For such a massive club, there appears to be a lack of big-money departures, which might be why the club's finances are always such a big talking point.

Bruno Fernandes off to a slow start in pre-season

The Red Devils will finish their pre-season preparations against AC Milan, having beaten Leeds United on penalties on Wednesday, 12 August.

Fernandes played the final half-an-hour at Croke Park, Dublin, taking three shots, all off target, and and creating zero chances in the game [FotMob].

He did hit the woodwork, as well as make five passes into the final third, while making two recoveries, one interception, and losing 100 per cent of his ground duels.

The veteran playmaker is clearly still getting back up to speed after the 2026 World Cup, but there are just nine days left until Man United's Premier League opener against Hull City.
