Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he expects an update on Newcastle United's pursuit of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi on Wednesday (21 August).

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs - insisted the Magpies will be under "pressure" to seal the deal after Fabian Schar's red card and subsequent three-match ban picked up against Southampton.

Eddie Howe's side have tabled four bids for the England international so far - the last of which was worth £65million including add-ons.

Guehi played for Palace in their 2-1 away loss at Brentford on Sunday (18 August) after his exploits with England at Euro 2024.

Huge Newcastle & Guehi update expected on Wednesday, says Wyness

Wyness insisted the delay in negotiations will be related to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) as Newcastle work hard to fund a deal for the centre-back.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It has dragged on.

“The delay will be PSR-related, there’s no doubt.

“But I still think it will get done. I think the three-game ban for Schar picked up at the weekend will expedite this deal and put a bit of pressure on Newcastle.

“I’m sure there have been discussions, and I’d expect news on this deal by Wednesday.

“That’s when we could see things moving a bit quicker.”
