Marcus Tavernier’s stats vs Man City should convince Newcastle to accelerate move
Marcus Tavernier should be at the top of Newcastle United‘s winger shortlist after he put on a show as Bournemouth drew against Man City.
Bournemouth handed Arsenal the Premier League title as they held second-placed City to a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday night.
Tavernier has impressed throughout this season and he was at his electric best for the Cherries against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Newcastle have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old ahead of the summer, and his performance should have convinced Eddie Howe to make him a top target in the coming months.
Howe will be fronting Newcastle’s transfer plans this summer after being backed by PIF to turn their inconsistent recent form around, with a new left-winger on the agenda as Anthony Gordon nears an exit.

Tavernier has registered 10 goal contributions in 33 league games this season, and while he did not add to his tally on Tuesday, he was still key to the Cherries’ strong showing.
He certainly deserved to pick up an assist in the 15th minute, after ghosting through on the left side of City’s box and sliding the ball across goal to Evanilson, only for the Brazilian striker to somehow miss an open goal.

The 27-year-old then played a big part in the Cherries’ goal just before half-time, as he threaded Adrien Truffert through down the left flank with a delightful pass before he assisted Eli Junior Kroupi with a low cross.
Another assist went begging late on as Tavernier’s cross from the left saw David Brooks force a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma when he should have found the net with aplomb.
Newcastle have reportedly earmarked the ex-Middlesbrough star as a target ahead of the summer, and he clearly has the quality to improve their squad for next season.
Howe is set to be in need of a new left winger as Gordon edges closer to joining Bayern Munich, and the Magpies must now accelerate a move for his services as other top-flight clubs take notice of his impressive form on the south coast.
Tavernier’s Newcastle links should boost their chances of sealing summer move
Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Bournemouth will accept an offer for Tavernier this summer, with Man United and Spurs also watching his progress.
Newcastle may feel like they are behind both of those clubs in the race for his services, but Tavernier’s close links to the club and city could hand them an advantage this summer.
Speaking in 2022 before featuring on Tyneside for Bournemouth, he said: “Most of my friends are Newcastle fans, so they want me to win the game, but they also want their team to win!
“I grew up in Newcastle and I lived there while I was at Middlesbrough, and I know a lot about the city and the club and everything to do with it.”
Howe has shown a desire to sign players with links to Newcastle over the last few years, particularly those who grew up as fans of the club or were raised in the city, so Tavernier seems a shrewd option for him to target to bolster their left wing ranks.
