Martin Keown: Manager is not getting best out of this Tottenham player
By Danny Wright
Arsenal icon Martin Keown believes that England manager Gareth Southgate is yet to get the best out of Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
Kane, 24, has been in stunning form for Spurs this year and pundits have waxed lyrical about the striker after he netted a hat-trick against APOEL in the Champions League on Tuesday.
He has nine goals in eight games across all competitions already this term – with five of them coming in the Champions League – having not found the net at all in August.
However Keown still thinks that to be lauded as one of the best strikers around, Kane must improve his form in the international stage and has called on Three Lions boss Southgate to make changes to his style of play to get the best out of the Tottenham player.
“What made someone like Johan Cruyff so great was that he performed at the highest level for both club and country,” said Keown on the Daily Mail website.

“Gareth Southgate has got to find a way to replicate Kane’s stunning performances with England.
“Yes, Kane has scored five goals in his last four caps but Southgate needs to think bigger ahead of the World Cup this summer.
“How does he make Kane prosper in Russia? With Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier there are plenty of Tottenham players who will be in contention for the World Cup squad — not forgetting Kyle Walker who until the summer was a team-mate of Kane’s.
“To get the best from Kane, Southgate needs to get England playing with the same intensity as Tottenham.”
Kane was one of many England players to have underperformed in Euro 2016 last summer when the Three Lions were dumped out of the knock-out stages by Iceland.
His form in the national shirt has improved in World Cup qualifying, but it seems clear that Keown wants him to show his worth on the biggest stage of all at the end of this season when England travel to Russia for the 2018 edition of the biggest tournament in football.
