Mason Mount is ‘unsellable’ this summer after Man United clause activated

Mason Mount would find it tough to leave Manchester United this summer after seeing an increase in his wages.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, as Mount’s salary is set to increase to £250,000 a week after Man United secured Champions League football for next season.

Mount only started 12 matches this season, with his campaign once again disrupted by injuries, as the 27-year-old has struggled for form since moving to Old Trafford from Chelsea in 2023.

Man United spent £55million to sign the midfielder, and the club will be expecting more goal contributions and less time on the sidelines next season if he stays at the club.

Fringe players could leave Man United this summer, as Michael Carrick plans to strengthen his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.

Mason Mount ‘nowhere near’ the player he was at Chelsea

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Mount’s performances don’t merit the England international getting a pay rise.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks that Mount could see out the final two years of his contract if Carrick can’t get the best out of him.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “This would have been a mistake in the contract that was done when Mount was bought.

“And certainly, if they had a clause in there that said if the Champions League was secured, then he would go up to £250,000 a week, then that makes Mount almost unsellable given his performances.

“He’s certainly shown some glimmers of coming back, but nowhere near the Mason Mount that we saw who was an exciting player at Chelsea. And he’s got a lot to come back.

“Now, hopefully Carrick can get the best out of him next year, because if he doesn’t, he’s almost unsellable at that level, and he’ll be sitting out his contract.”

Favourites revealed in Marcus Rashford transfer race

The future of Marcus Rashford remains uncertain, as Barcelona could struggle to afford to sign the 28-year-old this summer.

Man United want Barcelona to pay the £26.5m option-to-buy clause which was included in the loan deal for Rashford to join the Spanish giants.

Sources have told Football Insider that Barcelona remain favourites to sign Rashford this summer, but they do want to lower that fee to bring the forward permanently to the Camp Nou.

There is other interest in Rashford from Premier League clubs, and Barcelona’s fierce rivals Real Madrid, as a return to the Man United team under Carrick looks unlikely.
