Darren Bent has insisted it is “massive” Aston Villa have managed to tie John McGinn down to a new long-term contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa and England striker has lauded the midfielder’s “superb” performances for Dean Smith’s men since his move back in 2018.

The Scotland international has been a mainstay for the Villans since joining from Hibernian and has re-established himself in the side after a serious ankle injury last season.
Bent admitted Smith severely missed McGinn during his absence and insisted it was great to see him tied down for the foreseeable future.
Bent told Football Insider: “Absolutely massive, absolutely superb, McGinn is integral, they struggle so much without him.
“When he was out injured it was a big blow for them so for me, it’s massive they’ve tied him down there.
“They’ve got Watkins on a long-term deal, Grealish, these guys and I like what Villa have done this season, they look quite confident, they’ve played well, some big results – Arsenal, Liverpool – but it’s good that one of their main players has signed a new contract.”
McGinn has joined first-team mainstays Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings in penning a new long-term deal at Villa Park this season.
The Scottish star has not missed a minute of Premier League action this term, with one goal and four assists under his belt.
