'Massive' Man United claim made by pundit after 'awful' pre-season development
Kevin Phillips insists Manchester United fans should not be worried about the club’s defensive woes in pre-season.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the Red Devils’ poor recent defensive record.
Man United’s last two pre-season games were a 4-2 loss to QPR and a 2-2 draw with Brentford at Old Trafford.
While the club’s attack shone in both games and scored some sensational goals, the form of the defenders left a lot to be desired.
Especially against QPR as a backline including Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggled to contain Lydon Dykes and Charlie Austin.;
The Red Devils have agreed a deal in principle for Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire is yet to join up with his teammates.

As such, Phillips insists Man United fans have nothing to worry about ahead of the new season.
“It was a weaker side but to concede two goals at home is never good,” Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“No disrespect to Brentford but Man United can’t let them score twice at Old Trafford. That’s awful.
“They conceded four against QPR as well, which is massive. It’s pre-season but that’s concerning.
“You would think when the season starts they will step up. Having Maguire and Varane will make a massive difference.
“There were fans back in at Old Trafford and when you play there in front of fans as an opposition player, you up your game.
“That’s the challenge for Man United, their home form was erratic at best last season.
“The defence will be addressed because if that happens when Varane and Maguire are in there, questions will be asked.”
