Manchester United defender Brandon Williams would be a “very shrewd signing” for Newcastle United in this window, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker said a loan move to St. James’ Park would be a “massive opportunity” for the 20-year-old and one that could lead to a permanent.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with the United left footed full-back this month regarding a potential loan deal until the end of the season.
Williams made his debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in September 2019 and has made 41 senior appearances since.
Steve Bruce did bolster his ranks with the addition of Jamal Lewis in the summer, but the former Norwich City left-back has struggled since his arrival.
When asked by Football Insider if Williams would therefore be a welcome addition on Tyneside, Whelan said: “I think he would be a smart signing.
“He is one of these players who has been brought through the ranks at Manchester United in the right way. He has that little bit of grit and tenacity about him and you want that in a player.
“I am sure he would be going to Newcastle, seeing it as a massive opportunity. It could be a loan with a view to a permanent if he impresses because he has quite a few players ahead of him at Man United.
“I think that could be a really shrewd signing from Steve Bruce. He is a good young player with an exciting future.
“Can they get him? Hopefully because Steve Bruce needs bodies through the door.
“You can see that he is a player that is hungry to succeed, he has that fire in his belly. That is the sort of player Newcastle need right now. I love that.”
