Major development: 56-year-old open for Rangers talks after approach made - Sky Sports

Steve McClaren is open for talks with Rangers about the managerial vacancy, according to a report.

Sky Sports claims that the Light Blues have made an "informal approach" for the 56-year-old ex-England boss, who is currently working as an advisor to Maccabi Tel Aviv manager Jordi Cruyff in Israel.

The Sun has previously reported that the Gers had made contact with McClaren, however in this latest major development it seems that the Englishman is keen on opening a dialogue over a return to management.

McClaren was sacked by Derby in March before moving to Israel in August to work alongside former Manchester United player Cruyff.

He has had a number of different jobs in his career as manager, but will perhaps be best known for his horrific time in charge of the England international side when he failed to secure qualification to Euro 2008.

In his club career, McClaren's highlight was no doubt an Eredivisie title with FC Twente, but since then he has little to rave about in spells at Wolfsburg, Newcastle and Derby.

Are Rangers just trying to take a cheaper option, or do they really think McClaren would be a better option than Derek McInnes? Although the Aberdeen boss hasn't won over 100 per cent of Rangers fans, he would no doubt be a much better option to take the reins than McClaren, who has just about failed in every single job he has had in the last seven years. The Gers need someone who won't baulk at the challenge at Ibrox and the ex-Derby boss just seems like too much of a nice guy to be able to cope with the pressure-cooker environment at Ibrox. Rangers will demand success, and McClaren won't bring that.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has demanded the club to seal a six-figure deal for this manager.
