Agbonlahor fears for West Ham after Antonio update pre-Man Utd

Gabriel Agbonlahor has admitted it is a "shame" West Ham did not replace Sebastien Haller during the January transfer window.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, delivered his verdict after David Moyes revealed first-choice forward Michail Antonio was a doubt for their FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

Moyes told the club's official website the 30-year-old was "fatigued" and could not confirm whether he would feature at Old Trafford.

Antonio was replaced with 15 minutes to go in the Irons' 0-0 draw with Fulham at the weekend with winger Andriy Yarmolenko leading the line in his absence.

Asked whether he feared Moyes' lack of striker options could be West Ham's undoing, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent.

“I said it all through the transfer window they should’ve got Josh King. Maybe they didn’t because of the wages he wanted.

“They needed someone else there. You can’t sell your second choice striker in Haller and not replace him.

“I think that’s going to cost them in the long-term this season.

“Antonio leaves everything on the pitch when he plays, he’s that sort of player. There’s been that many games in succession it’s going to take its toll.

“It would be different if it was a normal season when you play Saturday then the following Saturday Antonio would probably be able to recover easily week to week. But when you’re playing so many games in short spaces, I wouldn’t have liked that because you’re going to pick up little calf niggles, little hamstring niggles. Maybe that’s what Antonio’s getting.

“He’s got a big game on Monday that West Ham want to win. It’s a shame West Ham didn’t go and buy a striker.”
