A new right-back should be the number one Tottenham priority in the summer window, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England forward claimed their current reliance on Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty could cost them a place in the top four and progression in the Europa League this season.

If the Ivorian leaves, it will leave just Doherty as Mourinho's only senior right-back.

“That’s the position,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think they’re going to really struggle, Spurs. It might cost them in Europe and the top four.

“I do like Doherty but he’s a player you play in certain games, for me, he’s not the player you play against the big boys where you’re going to get tested. The game at the weekend was the perfect game for him to play, he wasn’t really tested.

“Aurier is not great defensively, he’s ok going forward.

“That’s the number one position I feel Jose Mourinho will be looking at improving on.

“If he can bring in a top, top right-back, you’ve already got a top left-back and improve the centre-halves. Then you’re not far off.

“You look at the front players, you look at the two midfield players, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele. Spurs aren’t far off fighting for top two, top three. But right-back is a big position.”

Both Aurier and Doherty have shared right-back duties this season and neither has managed to hold down the position.

In recent weeks academy graduate Japhet Tanganga, a natural centre-back, has also filled in.
