Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has launched a withering attack on former manager Steve McClaren on Twitter, on the day he was re-appointed manager of Derby County.

Steve McClaren, the former England manager, was given the Newcastle job in the summer of 2015, but had a disastrous start to the season.

After eight Premier League games without a win and six defeats, including a 6-1 thrashing by Manchester City, McClaren finally recorded his first league win when his team mauled Norwich 6-2.

Any optimism was short lived though and he was sacked in March 2016 after a 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Rafa Benitez was given the job as Newcastle manager, but despite a run of six games unbeaten at the end of the season, his team were relegated to the Championship.

Before he took over at Newcastle, McClaren was sacked as manager of Derby after failing to get the club promoted. A terrible end to the 2014/15 season saw them miss out on the play-offs.

Just over one year on, McClaren has now been re-appointed as Derby manager and Alan Shearer, posting on his personal Twitter account, said this could happen "only in football".

Derby are currently in 20th place in the Championship table, one place behind Aston Villa with 10 points from 11 games.

The Midlands team host Leeds United on Saturday afternoon in a 3pm kick-off.
