Arsenal are expected to accelerate their transfer plans this month after talks between Mikel Arteta and the recruitment team at the Emirates.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the need for new recruits at the Emirates is growing stronger by the game.

With just one win in their last five games, and worsening injury issues, there have been suggestions of a squad "crisis" which may take significant investment to resolve.

A similar situation has been seen at Man City this month, with Pep Guardiola's side ramping up their efforts to complete a number of incoming deals after a huge dip in form.

However, it has also been said that the Gunners will struggle to keep up with City's spending and will have to be smart about their recruitment.

Arsenal step up transfer plans after Mikel Arteta talks

Arsenal completed just two permanent transfers in the summer, excluding the previously on-loan David Raya, and have been left short of quality options in a number of positions.

Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in player recruitment at the top level after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that Arsenal could be forced to spend if they want to resolve the issues in their squad.

"I think Arsenal are going to have to spend before the window closes," he told Football Insider.

"Arteta has been speaking to the recruitment team, he'll be telling them exactly what he wants and where he needs to strengthen before the window closes.

"They've started losing a few games and maybe cracks are beginning to show, and the way things are at the moment, you drop points and all of a sudden there's a crisis.

"I don't think things are that bad yet, but they're determined to make sure they don't get worse.

"With the injuries they've had as well, maybe they've been forced to consider positions they hadn't been concerned about before.

"Or positions which may have been looked at long-term, which will need to be addressed now.

"The problem is, I don't think they've got the capability to spend as much as Man City have for example, because they're in a similar position too.

"But Arsenal are going to have to spend because the issues in their squad have become clear, and if they don't address those, they're not going to solve any of the problems they're having."
