As Arsenal were making hard work of their Champions League match with Ludogorets in Bulgaria, it was announced that Alexis Sanchez has been accused of tax fraud from his time at Barcelona – and fans have taken to Twitter to make light of the charge.

A report in The Sun claims that the charges relate to a period at Barcelona between 2012 and 2013, and it was reported that he's alleged to owe £888,340 to the Spanish authorities and could face jail.

Sanchez would be the fifth player from Barcelona to be drawn into the tax scandal, after Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, Adriano and Samuel Eto'o were also investigated.

Messi and Mascherano both got jail sentences but as they were under two years in length, they were served on probation.

That means it's unlikely that Sanchez will face actual jail time, but it will be a distraction the club could do without after a fine start to the new season.

Sanchez in particular is in excellent form, with six goals in ten Premier League games and eight in 14 across all competitions.

Arsenal fans reacted with disbelief on Twitter, with some making mention of the supposed 'November curse' that strikes the club. Others found humour in the situation, although we're not sure the player will find it so funny.

Here is a selection of their tweets:
