Garth Crooks is convinced that Tottenham would already have built a statue of Arsene Wenger if he had managed the club instead of Arsenal.

The former Spurs striker is in no doubt that his old club would have thrived just as Arsenal did under the Frenchman.

Wenger announced last Friday that he will end his 22-year reign, during which he won three league titles and seven FA Cups, at the Gunners at the end of the season.

"I have always maintained that if Wenger managed Tottenham, they would have built a statue of him by now - and frankly, I can't think of a bigger or better compliment," Crooks wrote in his BBC Sport column.

Football Insider verdict:

Spurs went through manager after manager, most of them decidedly average, while Wenger was building his Arsenal empire and establishing himself as one of the all-time great bosses of the English game. However much Tottenham fans claimed they wanted Wenger to stay following a troubled few years at their north London rivals, there is no doubt he would have made a huge impact had he taken the reigns at White Hart Lane in the mid-1990s, especially at a time before Russian oligarchs, American magnates and Arab sheikhs transformed the finances of the Premier League game.
