Frank de Boer has been installed as the odds-on favourite to be the new Everton manager in the immediate wake of Roberto Martinez's dismissal.

The Spaniard was sacked on Thursday afternoon following a season at Goodison Park that failed to live up to expectations.

The final nail in the coffin came at Sunderland on Wednesday night, as Everton were comprehensively beaten 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Recently departed Ajax manager De Boer is a 2-5 favourite with Sky Bet on Thursday evening to be the next boss of the Merseyside club.

De Boer is well ahead in the betting to be manager for the first Everton match of next season over second favourite Mark Hughes, who is 5-1, while ex-Gooidson boss David Moyes is third favourite at 7-1 ahead of Manuel Pellegrini at 8-1.

Dutchman De Boer announced his departure from Ajax on Thursday morning after six years as the club's manager.

The 45-year-old, who led the Dutch side to four consecutive Eredivisie titles from 2011 to 2014, stepped down days after Ajax missed out of the title to rivals PSV Eindhoven.
