Leeds are in the running to sign Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing this month, according to the latest betting odds.

Bookmaker Sky Bet have priced Leeds at odds of 33/1 to land the 35-times England international after reports emerged that he will be allowed to leave the Stadium of Light during the January window.

The Yorkshire giants are in the market for attacking reinforcements this months, with a winger and a striker the priorities of manager Garry Monk.

Leeds are tipped as a relative outsider in the Downing race, with the new favourites Boro's north-east rivals Sunderland.

David Moyes' side are priced at evens to land Downing, 32, by 3 February after leapfrogging former favourites Crystal Palace, who are priced at 5/2.

The Premier League duo are a long way ahead of a number of Championship clubs, with West Ham (12/1), Aston Villa (18/1), Birmingham (22/1), Derby (25/1), Leeds, Brighton, Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday (all 33/1) relatively distant in the betting.

Sky Sports revealed on their official Twitter account that Downing would be allowed to leave Aitor Karanka’s side on loan until the end of the season.

Downing is in a second spell at boyhood club Boro after rejoining from West Ham in the summer of 2015.

The electric winger, who is renowned for his pace and dribbling ability, has had a fine career in the English top flight that once earned him a £20million transfer to Liverpool.

He has remained a regular for Boro this season, particularly in the opening three months of the campaign, although his 19 matches in all competitions have yielded only one goal and two assists.
