Birmingham City are in talks to sign Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis on loan before the transfer window closes, Football Insider understands.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe is happy to let the 24-year-old leave on loan so that he can find room to add his new signings to his Premier League squad.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Birmingham are set to beat off interest from several Championship clubs to land Lewis.

Newcastle United

The Northern Ireland international is set to be pushed down the pecking order at Newcastle with the arrival of Matt Targett from Aston Villa on loan.

Lewis signed a five-year deal when he joined from Norwich City for £15million in September 2020.

The 23-time Northern Ireland international has made just four appearances for the Magpies in the league this season.

He was unavailable for two weeks with a hamstring injury from the middle of December.

But Covid postponements meant the defender only missed three possible games.

He could become the second player to leave St James' on loan in the January window after Freddie Woodman's departure to Bournemouth.

Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes all joined the club earlier in the window.

And Newcastle have in the last hour announced the signing of Targett on loan from Aston Villa.

Birmingham meanwhile have added Teden Mengi, Onel Hernandez, Lyle Taylor and Taylor Richards in four separate loan deals this winter window, while Juninho Bacuna has joined permanently from Rangers.
