Blackburn Rovers are working on a deal to sign Sheffield United forward Oli Burke on loan, Football Insider understands.

The Blades are willing to let the 24-year-old leave the club on loan and several Championship rivals have expressed an interest in signing the Scotland international.

A Blackburn source has told Football Insider that they have opened initial talks to sign Burke before tonight's deadline as Tony Mowbray looks to add to his attacking options.

Burke signed from West Brom just last summer and has two years remaining on his contract at Bramall Lane.

The Nottingham Forest academy graduate has featured four times under new Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic this season.

But Burke, a 13-time Scotland international, has intense competition for a forward berth at the club.

Billy Sharp, Rhian Brewster, Oli McBurnie, David McGoldrick, Lys Mousset and Daniel Jebbison are all jostling for position up front.

Blackburn meanwhile are looking to fill an Adam Armstrong-shape hole in their forward line.

Armstrong departed for Southampton last week and has left Mowbray with limited options in the attacking positions.

Ben Brereton Diaz and Sam Gallagher, both natural centre-forwards, have moved to Ewood Park for a combined total of £11million in recent years.

But Mowbray has generally prefered to deploy both men on the wing.
