Bolton Wanderers are in advanced talks to sign Accrington Stanley striker Dion Charles, Football Insider understands.

Charles has been in a contract stand-off with Accrington and has refused to sign a new deal ahead of his current one expiring next summer.

A Bolton source has told Football Insider that Accrington want £250,000 for Charles, 26, in January.

They are willing to let him go in the upcoming window rather than risk allowing him to leave for free at the end of the season.

Bolton boss Ian Evatt wants to add to his attacking options in the January window and he has made Charles his top target.

Charles, a Northern Ireland international, netted 20 times and registered four assists for League One Stanley last season.

But his contract impasse has led to him not being included in a matchday squad for John Coleman's side since September.

As quoted by BBC Sport on 24 November, the Stanley boss revealed: "If someone comes in with the right bid for him of course he'll go."

Accrington, who beat Lancashire rivals Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in their last game on 11 December, are currently 10th in the third tier.

Evatt's Bolton side meanwhile have won one of their last five matches and occupy 15th place.

Preston-born Charles has spent the entirety of his career in the North West.

He graduated from Blackpool's academy in 2013 but was released 12 months later and joined National League side AFC Fylde.

He joined Fleetwood Town in 2016 where he spent time out on loan with Halifax but failed to make a league appearance.

Charles enjoyed a fruitful spell at Southport where he scored 18 times in 64 appearances before signing for Stanley in August 2019.
