BT Sport pundit Alan Stubbs has claimed that Everton are "crying out" for a striker in the mould of Celtic's Moussa Dembele after it was revealed that the Premier League club made contact about the Frenchman.

Celtic's former head of scouting Dave Moss claimed to the Daily Mail that he was asked by the Toffees whether they should pursue Dembele, 21, after Romelu Lukaku was sold to Manchester United in the summer.

Moss told Everton to 'not even blink' about making an approach, but after the summer transfer window slammed shut, a then-injured Dembele stayed at Parkhead.

The France Under-21 international has been somewhat of a lethal goal machine since moving to the Hoops from Fulham last year, and has since scored 38 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions.

Injuries have hampered him in recent months, but ex-Everton defender Stubbs made it clear that Dembele is exactly the type of player that the Toffees should be pursuing to cure their lack of goals.

"If he has an impact in the second half of the season, that price is going to keep on going up," said Stubbs, speaking ahead of Celtic's clash against Ross County on BT Sport 1 on Saturday, as quoted by the Mail.

"I think Everton are crying out for that type of striker. They need someone who is big, strong, powerful, and obviously scores loads of goals.

"He'd be a good fit for Everton right now, but obviously Celtic just want to see him out there scoring goals, and the more goals he scores, the more pound notes."

Dembele was a large part of helping Brendan Rodgers win the domestic treble with Celtic last season as they managed to avoid defeat against all other Scottish sides.
