Caixinha made big mistake with 22-year-old attacker: Rangers summer departures rated

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has been busy this summer.

Eleven new signings and eleven departures sees the Portuguese boss working with a much-changed squad from the one which he inherited last season from Mark Warburton.

Some fan favourites were allowed to move on after their contracts expired and others sold on before they could leave for nothing at the end of the season.

Ultimately, it's allowed Caixinha to build his own squad as he aims to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

With such a turnover of players it's no surprise Caixinha's side have taken a little time to get going this season but has he got rid of players who could have been the difference between success and failure?

Here, Football Insider rates the 11 players who left Rangers this summer, including a 22-year-old winger fans were disappointed to see leave.

1. Joe Garner

Garner came to Ibrox with a decent reputation and a fairly sizeable transfer fee but the striker never seemed to live up to either in his season in Scotland.

The highest point of Garner's Rangers career was the campaign to get The Dave Clark Five's Sixties hit 'Glad All Over' to Christmas Number One.

Like Garner's Rangers career, it never quite hit the target and he was despatched to Ipswich.

2. Phil Senderos

When you're at a club on trial and they try to sign someone else in your position, it doesn't really bode well for the future does it?

When Senderos was a trialist at Auchenhowie, Rangers made a move for Joleon Lescott and only a bad knee stopped that one from happening.

Senderos' entire Rangers career can be summed up by his Old Firm horror show when he got himself sent off for handball.

Senderos recently signed for Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer

3. Clint Hill

Clint Hill turned out to be the best of last season's summer signings.

At 37 many expected him to be back-up to Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan but the ex-QPR man made himself a regular starter.

He left when his one-year deal expired at the end of the season and fans would have been quite happy had it been extended for another year.

4. Matt Crooks

Matt Crooks joined Rangers last summer alongside Josh Windass but failed to make any impact.

Arriving injured didn't help the 6'4" Crooks' cause any, however when he did get an opportunity he looked completely out his depth.

His debut in the 4-2 thumping from Hearts did nothing to win over fans either.

A loan move to Scunthorpe in the second-half of the season gave him a chance to put himself in the shop window before moving to Northampton Town this summer.

5. Andy Halliday

Halliday lived every Rangers fans' dream when he signed for his boyhood club in 2014 but by 2017, the former Bradford midfielder had fallen from grace at Ibrox.

Struggling to make the team under Caixinha it was widely expected Halliday would move on this summer but his desitnation surprised everyone.

A season-long loan with Kazakh's Qabala gives Halliday the chance to go away and try earn himself a reprieve under Caixinha at Rangers.

Despite being much-maligned by supporters, Halliday undoubtedly tries hard but it's difficult to see him winning back a place at Ibrox in the future.

6. Michael O'Halloran

O'Halloran split fan opinion from before he had even joined Rangers and his performances after making the move did little to win over his many doubters.

Unable to command a regular start despite being pursued by Mark Warburton for months, O'Halloran practically ended his own Ibrox career by failing to show up for an U20s game in April.

He eventually headed back to St. Johnstone on loan after Rangers failed to find a permanent buyer for the forward.

Since returning to McDiarmid Park, O'Halloran has scored four goals in four league games.

7. Harry Forrester

Harry Forrester is devastated at missing the Old Firm showdown

When Harry Forrester arrived at Ibrox, it all look promising.

A talented playerworking with a manager who knew him well seemed like a match made in heaven.

Then Forrester had the same attitude problems he's had everywhere and found himself on the sidelines.

Every now and then he'd put in a quality performance but they were few and far between and when Pedro Caixinha was appointed manager it was the beginning of the end.

After turning down a permanent move to Southend, Forrester joined AFC Wimbledon on loan.

8. Rob Kiernan

Rob Kiernan was first choice central defender under Mark Warburton.

The former Wigan man started constantly until Caixinha arrived and bombed him out.

There was never one moment where, like some of the others, you could pinpoint the end of Kiernan's Ibrox career but it was clear all summer he wouldn't be around much longer.

9. Martyn Waghorn

Martyn Waghorn was a baffling player for Rangers fans.

When he was on form, he was a brilliant player to have around.

When he wasn't, he was as good as an empty jersey.

A fairly-prolific goalscorer for Rangers, Waghorn was shunted around to accomodate others and spent more time playing wide right than through the middle.

The former Leicester striker seemed to be part of Caixinha's plans before agreeing a surprise move to Ipswich, where he linked up with former team mate Joe Garner.

10. Joe Dodoo

Dodoo was one of those transfers that just never made much sense.

Never given a consistent run of games by Mark Warburton or Pedro Caixinha, the striker could change games when introduced.

He joined Charlton on loan on deadline day until January 1st so may still have an Ibrox future.

11. Barrie McKay

Barrie McKay was the poster boy for Rangers' youth development and as such fans had high hopes for the young winger.

Five years after breaking into the Rangers first team, McKay got into a contract dispute with the club who ended up cashing in before he could leave on a Bosman.

Former boss Mark Warburton agreed a cut-price deal for the Scottish international and took him to Nottingham Forest while Rangers fans were left bemoaning the fee they got in return.

A fantastic player on his day but his day is far and few between.

However, Caixinha made a mistake letting him go so cheaply – £770k is a steal.
