Newcastle United will let Callum Wilson leave the club for free upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the current season.

This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the striker's injury issues have put the club off of offering him a new deal.

Wilson, 32, will be out of contract at the end of the season and had been subject to plenty of speculation about his long-term future.

Eddie Howe was keen to keep the striker at St James' Park in the summer despite transfer interest, but the club are now said to be leaning towards letting him leave.

This comes after the striker was ruled out for up to two months with a hamstring injury despite having made his first appearance of the season just last month.

Since his move to Newcastle in 2021, Wilson has missed a total of 103 games so far for club and country – a number just shy of his 112 appearances for the club.

Those injuries have long been a concern for the Magpies, and there are no plans in place to extend his stay beyond next summer as a result.

Newcastle United make Callum Wilson contract decision

Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after spending over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that Wilson's exit will see them step up their interest in the summer.

"I think they'll let him leave when his contract expires," Football Insider.

"They've been weighing up the state of his injuries and how long he's been out for, then they have to balance it with what he can do on the pitch.

"Everybody says what a good lad he is to have about the place, and you feel sorry that his time there has been blighted by injuries.

"But from Newcastle's point of view, they're paying him a lot of money and not getting much back.

"From what I hear, there aren't any plans in place as things stand to hand him a new contract, so I'd expect him to leave the club at the end of the season.

"I think we've said before that they're keen to sign a new striker because of their lack of depth up front.

"If Wilson does leave, that will become an even bigger priority for them because they've only really got Isak - and he has his own issues with injuries."
