Campbell: Casilla has played his last game for Leeds United
There is no way back for Kiko Casilla at Leeds United following his loan move to Elche, according to Kevin Campbell.
The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 34-year-old's exit from Elland Road was "long, long overdue".
Leeds United confirmed on July 12th that the Spanish goalkeeper had joined La Liga side Elche on a season-long loan deal for the 2021-22 campaign.
Football Insider revealed two days earlier that the Yorkshire club would continue to pay a significant portion of the ex-Real Madrid player's £40,000-a-week wages.
Casilla's position at the club has been under severe scrutiny since he was given an eight-game ban for racially abusing for Charlton Athletic’s Jonathan Leko in Leeds’ promotion-winning season.
He is under contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2023.
When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Casilla's future, Campbell said:"It's been long, long overdue, his exit.
"It was always going to happen. I am not surprised that they have moved him on at the first opportunity.
"I cannot see him playing for Leeds agains. When you go out on loan and have two years left, you are just seeing out your time. I cannot see a way back for him at Leeds now."
As revealed by Football Insider (July 14th), Leeds made a move to sign Newcastle shot-stopper Freddie Woodman on loan with a view to buying.
However, the ex-Swansea keeper, who was seen as a potential replacement for Casilla, has knocked back the approach as he is unwilling to play second fiddle to Illan Meslier next season.
