Former Carlisle United forward Zach Clough is poised to join Australian A-League side Adelaide United on a free transfer, Football Insider understands.

Clough, 26, left Carlisle by mutual consent on transfer deadline day in order to seek a move elsewhere and he is now moving to Australia.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Adelaide United have offered the former Bolton and Nottingham Forest man the chance to kickstart his career in Australia.

The player is flying Down Under on Wednesday to finalise the move.

Carlisle revealed via their club website on 31 January that Clough had departed Brunton Park with "a view to signing for an overseas club".

The forward had been contracted until 2023 after joining the club last July (2021).

Clough has made 17 League Two appearances for Carlisle this term.

However, his last appearance in the starting line-up came against Harrogate on 23 November.

He also made six appearances for the Cumbrian side in cup competitions this season.

The forward came through the youth ranks at Bolton Wanderers.

He made his first-team debut in January 2015, starting and scoring in the FA Cup against rivals Wigan Athletic.

Clough eventually departed for Nottingham Forest in 2017 after scoring 23 goals in 77 games for Bolton.

Forest paid a reported fee of £3million for the Denton-born forward's services.

However, Clough failed to make an impression for the Championship side and returned to Bolton on loan in 2018.

The striker then joined Rochdale on loan and Wigan permanently, before dropping down to League Two Carlisle.

Adelaide United sit third in the A-League.
