Celtic fans on Twitter have heaped praise on Mikael Lustig as he helped Sweden qualify for the 2018 World Cup on Monday night.

Lustig, 30, played all 90 minutes as the Swedes preserved a one-goal lead from the first-leg to beat Italy in their play-off thanks to a 0-0 draw at the San Siro.

It was the first time the Italians have failed to make the World Cup since 1958 and was no doubt a stunning achievement from Sweden, who were forced to defend for pretty much the entire game.

Former Rosenborg right-back Lustig has been in decent form for Celtic recently and fans on Twitter made clear of their delight that he had qualified for Russia next year.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Lustig has been ever-present for Celtic this season, making 22 appearances across all competitions and scoring two goals in the process - both of which coming against Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

The Hoops have struggled for numbers at centre-back this term so at times the 62-times Sweden international has been forced to fill in at the heart of defence, usually when Brendan Rodgers has switched to a back-three formation.

Next up for the Bhoys is a clash against Ross County in Dingwall on Saturday as Premiership action resumes following the international break.
