Celtic victims of 'unfair' rule as Moritz Jenz footage analysed - pundit
Alan Hutton has claimed Celtic suffered from the "unfair" encroachment rule against Hearts (22 October).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers defender said that although the decision was unfair, it did follow the letter of the law.
As shown on Sky Sports (22 October), Joe Hart saved Lawrence Shankland's initial penalty but Josh Ginnelly was there to tap in the rebound.
But the spot kick was retaken after a VAR check found both Moritz Jenz and Ginnelly were encroaching and Shankland slotted it home the second time round.
The Celts went on to win the game 4-3 in VAR's first weekend in Scotland.
Speaking to club media after the game (22 October), Ange Postecoglou said he would rather not see VAR get involved "too much" in the game.
Hutton said that the situation was unfair on the Hoops but ultimately followed the rules.
"If I am right, because Ginnelly is encroaching, and he is the one that puts the ball in the net he has an advantage so it has to be retaken.
"It is a bit unfair. It has happened to Rangers before when Allan McGregor saved a penalty. You are obviously at a disadvantage by giving them another shot of scoring the penalty.
"It can be unfair, the rules are rules and it does go against one. Joe Hart does have the opportunity to try and save it again. It does not play out that way but it is the correct decision by the letter of the law."
