Fenerbahce have confirmed they are in talks to sign Martin Skrtel after he was released by Liverpool.

Football Insider reported on Wednesday that the Slovakian was on the brink of a move to the Turkish club and would seal the deal when he returned from his holiday.

Fenerbahce have now released a short statement on their official website to confirm talks between the two clubs.

The 31-year-old has been with the Merseyside club since 2008 and is set to join Fenerbahce for a fee around £5million and will be joining up with the runners up of the Turkish league last season.

Skrtel has picked up an English League Cup medal during his Anfield career and was instrumental in the cup final, as he scored an equalising goal before Liverpool went on to triumph on penalties over Championship side Cardiff City.

He has amassed over 300 appearances at Liverpool and also boasts over 80 international matches to his name, unfortunately he couldn’t prevent Slovakia’s exit to Germany in the last-16 at Euro 2016 as they were defeated 3-0.

The defender is following in the footsteps of former Liverpool favourite Dirk Kurt, who moved from Merseyside to Fenerbahce back in 2012.
