Chelsea fans no longer see Enzo Fernandez as indispensable at the club after his poor performance in their 2-0 League Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday (October 30).

The 23-year-old failed to win a single tackle while playing as a defensive midfielder in Chelsea's defeat at St. James' Park, which led to their elimination from their first domestic cup under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Fernandez has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this season, with Maresca favouring a double pivot of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in their last two Premier League games against Liverpool and Newcastle.

The World Cup winner's only goal involvement so far this season came as an assist in their 2-0 Europa Conference League qualifier win over Servette.

Chelsea fans looking to a future without Enzo Fernandez

Despite splashing a then-British record transfer fee of £106.8million back in January 2023, fans are looking at potential replacements for the central midfielder.

According to Spanish outlet Relevo, Real Madrid are interested in selling long-term Chelsea target Aurelien Tchouameni, and fans have taken to X, formally known as Twitter, to discuss a potential swap deal with Fernandez.
