Chelsea to learn points deduction fate sooner than everyone thinks - 'it will happen', says Wyness

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea should learn their points deduction fate by Christmas (2024) based on their accounts up until June of this year.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Premier League will be keen to expedite the process next season after rushing to complete hearings for Everton and Nottingham Forest this year.

Chelsea are expected to be close to the limit of the top-flight's Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) when they submit accounts for the 2023-24 campaign.

They have already recorded combined losses of £211.5million in the last two seasons – with PSR only permitting a deficit of £105million over three years.

Wyness has already told Football Insider (23 March) that it will take some "very clever engineering" in the transfer market for Chelsea to escape a points deduction.

Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been handed six and four-point deductions for their respective PSR breaches.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think it will happen mid-season for Chelsea if they are in breach for the 2023-24 season.

“The Premier League will have seen the problems they have created and will be keen to expedite things as well as they can.

“I think if something is to happen at Chelsea, it’ll happen around Christmas time. That would be the right time to get this stuff resolved.

“It will be pretty clear by June where things are, and the numbers should be filed. Chelsea will then have to face the music.”
