Thomas Christiansen has confirmed that Matthew Pennington has jetted out to Austria to join up with the Leeds squad.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that the 22-year-old defender will be joining the Whites on a season-long loan from top-flight outfit Everton.

Speaking after a training session on Tuesday night, Christian told the Yorkshire Evening Post about Pennington's situation.

"He will arrive at the hotel tonight. From tomorrow morning he will be with the team," the Whites boss said.

There has been no official comment from Leeds' official Twitter account or website as of yet, but it looks as though Pennington is set to be a part of Christiansen's squad for next season.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Leeds beat off competition from Hull to land the defender, who now looks to be the latest part of a major summer overhaul at Elland Road.

Leeds have notably improved most areas of their squad, but are yet to make any additions the centre of defence.

They will be without Pontus Jansson for the first two games of the season through suspension, meaning that Liam Cooper was the only viable option in the centre-back role following Kyle Bartley's return to Swansea.

Football Insider Verdict

Pennington will make a solid addition to the Leeds squad, and the fact that they beat Hull to the punch means that Elland Road is looking like a more exciting place to be at the moment than a team that has just been relegated from the Premier League. Centre-backs have to be at the top of Christiansen's summer shortlist, and the Dane should really be in the market to sign up another one before the transfer window slams shut. Jansson should be the Whites' main man in defence, but it remains to be seen whether Cooper or Pennington would be joining the big Swede.
