Rangers chiefs decided after one meeting with Pedro Caixinha that he was the ideal candidate to become the club's new manager.

The Scottish giants announced on their official website on Saturday afternoon that the Portugese, 46, had been appointed as the successor to Mark Warburton.

Caixinha has signed a three-year contract that will run until the summer of 2020 after agreeing to quit Qatari side Al-Gharafa to move to Glasgow.

Rangers stressed in a statement that the former of manager of Uniao Leiria, Nacional and Mexican club Santos Laguna was the number one target of the Ibrox board as they explained how Caixinha had won them over.

“We are delighted to welcome Pedro to Rangers," said managing director Stewart Robertson. "We compiled a shortlist of high-quality candidates for the position but we knew after our initial meeting with Pedro that he was the right man to take this club forward.

“He is a man of great experience and authority and the board has no doubt he will help us achieve our long-term goals. I would like to thank the Rangers supporters for their patience throughout the process but we were determined to appoint the best candidate possible.”

Rangers have turned their attention to Caixinha in a bid to narrow the gap on Celtic, who are 33 points clear of their bitter rivals this season as they close in on a sixth consecutive title.

The bitter rivals go head to head at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday for the fourth Old Firm derby of the season.

Rangers are aiming to reverse a disastrous sequence of results against Celtic, with the Hoops winning all three of their meetings this season, including a 5-1 demolition at Parkhead in September.
