Chelsea are continuing to negotiate with Atletico Madrid over a move for Conor Gallagher before the 31st August deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the midfielder’s exit from Stamford Bridge is “as close as it’s ever been.”

There have been talks of the England international leaving Chelsea for the last 18 months, but the Blues are now looking to hammer out a fee with Atletico Madrid.

The La Liga side wants to pay £30-35million, while Chelsea are hoping to sell Gallagher for £45million.

Even though the two clubs are quite far apart in their valuation, Chelsea’s preference is to sell him abroad.

There is a willingness from Chelsea to get the deal over the line before the window shuts, but some negotiating will have to take place with Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea are not in the driving seat over Conor Gallagher’s future

Even though the Blues are driving a potential sale for Gallagher, sources noted that a move will only happen if Gallagher gives the green light.

The central midfielder is in the driving seat, and he could choose to stay at Stamford Bridge and run down his contract.

Chelsea are looking to sell and not risk him leaving for free next summer, but Gallagher is in a strong position.

Gallagher was ever-present in the Chelsea squad last season, playing 50 games and scoring seven goals in all competitions.

Former Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino even made Gallagher captain for several games as he was a driving force in the team.
