Everton fans are victims of 'tragedy' as Celtic cited after confirmed Rodriguez news - McAvennie

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie insists it is a "tragedy" James Rodriguez never got to play in front of Everton fans.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the Colombian departed Goodison Park.

Al Rayyan confirmed the signing of Rodriguez on 23 September.

He failed to make an appearance for Everton this season

According to Sky Sports, Rodriguez became the highest-paid player in Everton's history when he joined the club on a two-year deal in 2020.

During his time on Merseyside, he scored six goals in 26 appearances for the Toffee.

Due to the pandemic, Rodrigeuz failed to play in front of Everton fans during his stay in England and McAvennie insists this is the real tragedy of the move.

"It's a real shame for Everton," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"It's also a real shame for Rodriguez. For a talent like that to go to Qatar, it's just for money.

"I went to Hong Kong before I retired and after three weeks I had to leave. I was too good for that.

"I just had to come back. I signed for Celtic and everything was great again.

"He will go over there and stroll around, that's fine if he wants to do that. I just think he's better than that.

"He has everything in his locker to be one of the best players in the world, it's a tragedy the Everton fans never got to see him."

Al Rayyan are managed by Laurent Blanc and finished third in the domestic Qatar Stars League last season.

Everton are next in action against Manchester United on Saturday.
