Everton fans have taken to Twitter to vent their anger after Sam Allardyce was installed as the bookmakers' odds-on favourite to fill the Goodison Park vacancy.

SkyBet now have the former England manager priced at 4/7 to take the reins at Goodison Park as Martin O'Neill drifted down to joint second favourite at 6/1.

Watford's Marco Silva (6/1) remains in the running but it's still anyone's guess as to who Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright will hire after over a month of indecision from the two Toffees supremos.

However Everton fans seem to believe that Allardyce, 63, is now a sure bet to become the next manager - and that is simply something that they universally do not want to see happen.

One angry fan claimed his appointment would be the "pinnacle of mediocrity".

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Allardyce is known for his direct style of football and ability to drag teams away from the Premier League's relegation zone - but fans of Everton clearly see them as being above that kind of ideology.

The Merseyside club's hunt for a new manager has taken many twists and turns with the hierarchy seemingly divided about who they wanted to replace Ronald Koeman, who was sacked over a month ago.

David Unsworth has been less than convincing in caretaker charge, winning just one of his seven games at the helm and conceding nine in his last two.
