Everton fans have taken to Twitter in anger at the news that Ramiro Funes Mori will probably miss the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old was stretchered off the pitch while on international duty for Argentina and has since been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his knee.

Funes Mori broke down in the 36th minute as Argentina's hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup took a huge blow with a surprise defeat in Bolivia.

A statement on the official Everton website revealed the news on Wednesday.

"It has been confirmed that the defender suffered a torn meniscus in Argentina’s 2-0 defeat to Bolivia on Tuesday evening," the club statement read.

"He will have a surgical opinion next week but the initial diagnosis suggests the 26-year-old is likely to be out of action for the rest of the campaign."

Everton have had some torrid luck during the international break with James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman picking up injuries on duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Coleman is set for a lengthy spell of rebabilitation after he suffered a broken leg in his nation's qualifier match against Wales.

Here is a selection of tweets from Everton supporters about the latest injury blow:

Funes Mori has made 26 appearances in all competitons for Everton this season and has emerged as one of Ronald Koeman's top choices to play in the centre of the defence.

He was earning his 15th cap for Argentina on Tuesday night.
