Everton have leapfrogged a number of top-flight rivals in the race to sign Belgium-based sensation Henry Onyekuru, according to a report.

The Sun on Sunday claim the Merseysiders plan to beat their rivals to the £7million signature of Onyekuru.

It is said that Everton officials have been to Belgium to try to close a deal for the prolific wide player, who is the talk of the country as a result of his form for KAS Eupen.

The Sun on Sunday report that the left winger, 19, has already attracted offers from Celtic, Southampton and Sevilla.

Everton would have to pay a large fee and wages to get Nigerian Onyekuru into England as he has not yet been capped by his country, which means there are work permit hurdles to be overcome.

It has been reported elsewhere that Celtic tabled a formal bid for Onyekuru in January, while West Brom and Liverpool have also been linked with the coveted attacker in the summer.

The Nigerian has made a huge impact in the Belgian Jupiler League this season with Eupen and continued his hot form in front of the admiring English clubs with his 19th goal of the season in their 3-3 draw at Kortrijk in the Belgian league's Europa League play-offs last weekend

It was the fifth goal in four play-offs matches for Onyekuru, who has now scored 19 goals from 37 matches in all competitions as well as provided nine assists.

It has put him in firm contention to win the Belgium player of the year award, which would be a huge achievement given his youth.

In an interview with L’Avenir, the Nigerian wonderkid, who plays predominantly as a left-winger but can also spearhead the attack, recently asserted that he will be leaving his club at the end of the campaign.

“I’m going to leave this summer. I have the agreement of the Eupen club,” Onyekuru said to L’Avenir.
