Gabby Agbonlahor has defended Everton boss Frank Lampard despite admitting he was "naive" in allowing Wolves to counter and score a last-gasp winner on Boxing Day.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Goodison Park faithful were also "pushing for the win" despite their perilous league position.

Relegation-threatened Wolves secured all three points on Monday (26 December) with Rayan Ait-Nouri's 95th-minute strike completing the turnaround after Yerry Mina gave Everton the lead inside seven minutes.

As seen on BBC's Match of the Day (26 December), ex-players Alan Shearer and Dion Dublin pulled no punches about the "disappointing" defending which saw Wolves take full advantage of a four-vs-two situation.

The result leaves Everton still one point above the relegation zone, but now with just a two-point buffer to 20th-place Southampton.

The Toffees, who have scored the third-fewest goals in the division, face Man City on Saturday (31 December).

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It was a bit naïve from Lampard.

“But you could see how the Everton fans were wanting to push for the win. They didn’t want to settle for the draw.

“It was just unlucky the way the ball broke for Wolves.

“If it had worked, and they had scored – then everyone would have been praising the risk he took.

“Everton need to focus on being more dangerous across 90 minutes. They can’t be relying on late goals to win games.”
