COMMENT

Sam Allardyce's first game in charge of Everton had a fairytale start as he was able to guide his side to victory over Huddersfield Town thanks to Gylfi Sigurddson grabbing the first goal of the new regime.

The Toffees controlled the game for brief spells during the first-half, but couldn't seem to put any passes together in row, and were frustrating their fans with their sloppiness.

However, the first-half was poor for both teams thankfully for Everton, as they looked a shadow of the team that defeated West Ham 4-0 in their last game.

The second-half was a different story, as Everton came alive to get themselves in front as Dominic Calvert-Lewin skillfully flicked the ball to Sigurddson who fired the ball home.

Calvert-Lewin then got a goal for himself in the 73rd minute to secure Allardyce's first win as Everton boss.

The Toffees went into this game sat 13th in the league with 15 points from 14 games, but victory against Huddersfield has fired them into the top-half of the table.

Goalkeeper and defence

Jordan Pickford (Goalkeeper) - 6: Didn't have much to deal with, but in the little action he saw, he dealt with everything comfortably and was never in danger of letting his second successive clean sheet go.

Jonjoe Kenny (Right-back) - 6: Got booked early on and successfully played smart to stay on the pitch with a card happy referee. Hard to fault the young defender due to Huddersfield not really testing him.

Ashley Williams (Centre-back) - 7: The 33-year-old had his best game for a while and looked like the player he was last season. If he continues under Allardyce like this, fans might stop booing him.

Mason Holgate - (Centre-back) - 6: Had a nervous start to the game despite not having much to deal with but settled down once Everton had taken the lead.

Cuco Martina (Left-back) - 6: The defender had a great chance to score in the first-half and forced the goalkeeper to parry his shot. However, his defending got called into question as he let Tom Ince run at goal in the second-half.

Midfield

Tom Davies (Right-midfielder) - 4: Got booked and never looked like influencing the game in a positive way before he was subbed. The 19-year-old's lack of pace was exposed a couple of times when he tried to break from midfield, but you couldn't fault his effort.

Idrissa Gueye (Centre-midfielder) 8: Quietly got on with what was required of him, and was one of Everton's unsung heroes today due to the way he held onto the ball.

Wayne Rooney (Left-midfielder) 8: Kept trying and was constantly rallying the team together. The striker's best moment came when he created a golden opportunity for Calvert-Lewin, which the young striker took. With passing like that, Rooney is going to be great asset playing deeper for the Toffees.

Forwards

Aaron Lennon (Right-winger) - 8: Bright throughout the game, he was the only one who could hold his head high after the first-half and continued to positively impact the game in the second-half. Fans rightfully sung his name when the player was subbed in the 70th minute.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Striker) -9: Battled away in the first-half to no avail but the striker gifted Sigurdsson his goal with a beautiful flick which should have pundits purring. The striker was then able to grab a goal, thanks to a deflection, but it was no less than he deserved.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (Left-winger) - 8: Wasted several free-kicks in the first-half to the point where Rooney had to insist on taking the next ones. However, the striker struck early in the second-half to set Everton on their way to victory, and then continued to be dangerous.

Substitutes

Morgan Schneiderlin (Central midfielder) - 5: Didn't really make an impact from the bench and Everton fans booed him as he joined the game.

Ademola Lookman (Right winger) - 6:  The midfielder showed signs of what he is capable of, linking with Kenny on the right-side but replacing Lennon was a hard task after his performance.

Michael Keane (Centre-back) N/A: Came on for Rooney with 10 minutes to go and didn't have time to do very much.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are favourites to sign this Allardyce favourite who was valued at £20million in the summer.
