Rafael Benitez is running a risk by publicly criticising his Everton players after the defeat to Crystal Palace, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 61-year-old could lose the dressing room if he is not careful.

The Toffees slipped to 14th in the Premier League this weekend after a 3-1 loss at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

As quoted by the Daily Mail (12 December), Benitez claimed his team "are not amazing in possession" and "must realise it" in yesterday's post-match press conference.

The ex-Liverpool and Newcastle manager has already had a fallout with Lucas Digne this season.

Robinson suggested more players could turn on the manager if he continues to publicly criticise their performances.

"The players will not like hearing that," he told Football Insider.

"The manager is going to give reasons as to why his players aren't playing particularly well though.

"You would like to think Benitez knows how his players will respond to that kind of comment. Some players need telling but some players need an arm around them.

"As a manager, if you criticise your players in the press you run the risk of losing the dressing room. It is a fine line to tread as a manager.

"You have to be careful and you have to know your players. You can lose a player or two by doing that."
