Everton set for 'massive loss' after source's update as pundit 'surprised'
Everton will suffer a "massive loss" if they lose Duncan Ferguson to Blackburn.
That's according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the coach's future.
On 30 May, a recruitment source told Football Insider that Ferguson has been interviewed by Blackburn officials and that he is now the clear front-runner to take charge at Ewood Park.
It is understood Everton have accepted they are now likely to lose their club legend and long-serving coach.
He has served as intern manager on two occasions, following the sackings of Marco Silva in December 2019 and Rafael Benitez in January 2022.
McAvennie was surprised to hear Ferguson may leave Goodison Park.
"He would be a massive loss if he went," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
"He's Everton through and through. He needs to be that go-between for the manager and the players at Everton.
"For a manager, it's great to have Dunc on your side. I don't know him and I don't know what his ambitions are.
"But if his ambition is to become a manager then I always thought it would be for the Everton job.
"I'm surprised but if he wants to be a manager he has to go and try it."
The Venky’s ownership group elected not to renew Mowbray’s contract at the end of the 2021-22 campaign, and he has now left the club.
Mowbray delivered promotion from League One in his first full season in charge of Rovers and leaves them as an established Championship side.
