Paul Robinson has revealed new Man United coach Benni McCarthy is "a brilliant character" who will "brighten up" the dressing room at Old Trafford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England goalkeeper, who played with McCarthy at Blackburn Rovers, suggested the Red Devils had made a smart appointment.

On Saturday (30 July), Man United announced that Erik ten Hag has added McCarthy to his backroom team ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

The ex-Blackburn and West Ham striker joins the Red Devils as a first-team coach.

McCarthy left his post as AmaZulu manager in March after guiding the South African team to second in the league.

He was named the division's coach of the season last year.

The ex-South Africa international is a boyhood United fan and scored twice against the club for FC Porto in the 2003-04 Champions League.

When asked by Football Insider for his insight on McCarthy's character and credentials, Robinson said: "Benni is a brilliant character.

"He is one of those guys who brightens up a dressing room. His smile and personality is infectious.

"He is a fantastic person to have around your club.

"He was a natural goalscorer and finisher. I remember him scoring some great goals when we played together."

Speaking to club media after his appointment, McCarthy said: "I’m just excited and happy to be here.

"How can you not be when you're standing in the Theatre of Dreams?"
