Blackburn Rovers are plotting a move to sign midfielder Alex Gorrin from Oxford United this month, Football Insider understands.

The 26-year-old has quickly established himself as a mainstay for the League One outfit after joining on a free transfer from Motherwell in 2019.

A source at Blackburn has told Football Insider that the Championship side are keen on signing the Spanish player over the winter window as manager Tony Mowbray looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

Born in Tenerife, Gorrin came through the youth system at north east heavyweights Sunderland before leaving England for Australia back in 2014.

He spent three years at Wellington Phoenix before returning to Europe with Boavista, his time in Portugal coming to an end after just six months.

The central midfielder then played in Belgium with Sepsi OSK before returning to the UK with Motherwell, swapping Scotland for England a year later.

He has played 27 times across all competitions for The U's this season, with 21 of those appearances coming in League One as the club chase promotion to the Championship.

His performances have caught the eye of second-tier outfit Blackburn, who are looking to add to their squad after a decent start to the current campaign.

The former Premier League winners sit 13th in the table after losing their first game of 2020 in a 3-2 thriller against Nottingham Forest.

Rovers have already seen midfielder Ben Gladwin depart Ewood Park at the end of his short-term contract and Mowbray is looking to give himself more options in the middle.
