Blackpool are close to agreeing to to sign Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Maxwell after his Hibernian loan was cut short, Football Insider understands.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper is out of contract at Deepdale this summer and the club are allowing him to leave as he is well down the pecking order.

A source at Preston have told Football Insider that Maxwell is in advanced talks to join Blackpool on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The Welshman spent the first half of the season on loan at Scottish Premiership outfit Hibernian after moving to Easter Road on a season-long deal last summer.

The Welshman made 17 appearances for Hibs in the first half of the season, keeping two clean sheets in the process.

However, Maxwell has not featured for the first-team since the 2-0 defeat to Celtic in December.

Hibs feel they have enough cover in the goalkeeping department in the shape of Ofir Marciano and Adam Bogdan and are happy to cancel Maxwell's loan stint early.

Blackpool were in the market for a new keeper this month after having lost No.1 shot-stopper Jak Alnwick for up to three months due to a serious arm injury.

Blackpool boss Simon Grayson is a big admirer of Maxwell having worked with the keeper during his time in charge of Preston and he sees him as a key addition to his plans at Bloomfield Road.

The shot-stopper has featured a total of 83 times for Preston, registering 25 clean sheets and conceding 105 goals in the process.
