Doncaster Rovers are in advanced talks to sign Manchester City and Wales midfielder Matt Smith, Football Insider understands.

A recruitment source has now told Football Insider that Doncaster are in pole position to seal a deal ahead of their rivals for the Welsh star ahead of Friday's domestic transfer deadline.

Donny are looking to add reinforcements to their squad after a mixed start to their new League One campaign.

Smith, who joined City's academy from West Brom's youth setup back in 2013, is yet to feature for the Cityzens' senior side and has spent the last two seasons out on loan.

His first spell away from the Etihad Stadium saw him join FC Twente in the second-tier of Dutch football, where he made a total of 37 appearances, 34 of which came in the league.

He joined Queens Park Rangers last summer and made 10 appearances before he moved across London to join Charlton Athletic for the second half of the season.

However, he managed to play just twice for the Addicks as they were relegated to League One on the final day of the campaign.

Despite his lack of regular game time at club level, Smith is an established member of Ryan Giggs' squad for Wales.

He has played 10 times for his country since making his debut back in 2018 and featured in all three of their most recent fixtures.
