Exclusive: Hutton suggests Barisic may exit as tailor-made replacement drops Rangers reveal

Alan Hutton has suggested that Leeds United defender Barry Douglas could join boyhood club Rangers if Borna Barisic were to leave Ibrox this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers right-back believes the Elland Road star could return to Glasgow should the club's current left-back depart.

As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds are open to offers for the 30-year-old Scotland international regardless of which division they are playing in.

Speaking in a Q&A on Leeds' official Twitter account, Douglas revealed that he grew up supporting the Light Blues after being born and raised in Glasgow.

Hutton believes that the former Wolves man could get the chance to play for his boyhood club but admits that his chances could rest on the future of Gerrard's current first choice.

Asked if he thought Rangers could make a move for Douglas now he is available, Hutton told Football Insider: "Yeah, possibly. I think you have to look at the Barisic situation.

"I think that would be a key factor if he was to stay or leave but look, I think Barry Douglas is an excellent player. He went abroad, did really well, came back to Wolves and I thought he was arguably their best player.

"It shocked a lot of people when he was moved upon promotion. Possibly a move to Rangers, with him saying he supports them, could be a good opportunity for him to get back on track, back playing.

"He's a wonderful crosser of the ball so it's something Rangers look for in a player so I think he could fit in but a lot would hinge on the Barisic thing. I wouldn't imagine he wouldn't want to come up north to be sitting on the bench." 

Barisic has established himself as a mainstay at Ibrox after a difficult start to life in Glasgow, with 39 appearances, two goals and 14 assists for the 27-year-old this season.

Douglas meanwhile has fallen down the pecking order at Elland Road, with just 13 games under his belt this term.
