Leeds United have set their sights on a sensational move to re-sign Lewis Cook, Football Insider can reveal.

The Whites academy product, 23, quit Elland Road in 2016 to join Bournemouth for a fee of around £6million.

But the south coast club's descent into the Championship has opened the door for Premier League sides to cherry-pick their top talent.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Cook is firmly on their radar as they look to strengthen in central midfield ahead of their top-flight return.

United believe Bournemouth's relegation and their former star's association with United could combine to lure him back to the club where he made his name.

Cook has won his first England cap during his time at the Vitality Stadium and played 85 times for the club.

But he made only 14 league starts among 29 appearances last season after missing the start of the season with the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament he sustained to his right knee in December 2018.

At that time, Cook was playing the best football of his career and being touted as a potential mainstay of Gareth Southgate's side.

The central midfielder also played 85 times for Leeds before he joined Bournemouth four years ago.

He was a first-team regular at the age of 17 and was regarded by many as the team's outstanding player when he left.
