Newcastle United are targeting a new right-sided winger in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies will face strong competition for European qualification in the 2024-25 campaign and are keen to add to their squad in the mid-season window.

However, their well-known struggles to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) mean Newcastle will have to sell players in order to buy.

It is believed the Magpies are open to wheeling and dealing in January despite not having the deepest squad for Eddie Howe to work with.

Miguel Almiron is one player being lined up as a potential sacrifice for Newcastle as they want to upgrade upon the Paraguay international as a matter of urgency.

Jacob Murphy is the first-choice on the right side of Howe's three-pronged attack but the club want to sign a new option.

It is believed Saudi and Premier League clubs are also monitoring the 30-year-old's situation.

Almiron has been at St James' Park since 2019 but has made just one top-flight start in seven league appearances this term.

Meanwhile, Murphy has notched three goals and six assists in 17 games across all competitions.

Newcastle are well-stocked on the opposite flank with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes to call on.

The Magpies sit fifth in the Premier League table after a convincing 2-0 win over Man United on Monday (30 December).
